LETRAN EDGES OUT PERPETUAL IN THRILLING TRIPLE OVERTIME SHOWDOWN
Colegio de San Juan de Letran emerged victorious over the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA in a gripping triple overtime contest, clinching an 82-73 win in the NCAA Season 100 Seniors Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
The Knights faced considerable challenges in putting away a resilient Perpetual team, which fought hard despite the limitations of key players Mark Gojo Cruz and Christian Pagaran, who struggled with cramps throughout the game.
Letran finally took control in the third overtime, sparked by Nat Montecillo's crucial three-pointer that propelled the Knights into a lead they would not relinquish. The Intramuros-based squad then unleashed a 14-5 run in the final period, capped off by Jimboy Estrada's jumper and free throws, sealing the nine-point victory.
Deo Cuajao was the standout performer for Letran, leading the team with 19 points, including five triples. Montecillo also made significant contributions, hitting four three-pointers for a total of 14 points.
Estrada recorded 12 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists. Kevin Santos matched Estrada's scoring output with 12 points while also grabbing 15 boards. Joseph Nunag added valuable support with 11 points.
This hard-fought victory allowed Letran to break a three-way tie and secure sole possession of second place in the standings, improving their record to 5-2, just behind the Benilde Blazers.
Looking ahead, the Knights are set to face their rivals and defending champions, the San Beda University Red Lions, on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
